You will find a review on Max Jammer’s new book, Concepts of Simultaneity: From Antiquity to Einstein and Beyond, in this well-written American Scientist article.
I have three other well-known books by Jammer — “Concepts of” Space, … Force, and … Mass –, but could only find time to finish the latter. It is a very erudite work, written with great care and detail. According to the reviewer, his new book misses some recent developments, but given the material covered and also considering that Jammer is such an excellent writer, I believe it will be also worth reading.

Hello Christine:
Happy Holidays to you and your family. Yes, I feel that a paradigm shift is needed in how scientific research is conducted. Career advancement and science should almost be exclusive quantities. I think that the garage scientist, who does it for the love is a good example of a scientist who does not perform his or her research for self aggrandizement. Ego has to go if one is to submit to scientific curiosity and logical thought, as I have said a few times now. I also feel as though scientfic research is oft mired in bureaucracies where paper is more important than ingenuity…If we can somehow find a balance between degrees awarded and ones ability to think creatively then we may solve this problem. Weber be damned! Great post.
