Introducing… my Brazilian ‘Tigre d’Água’ Turtles

turtles.jpg

Here they are. They are one year old now and were legally purchased from this breeder. In English they are called “D’Orbigny’s slider turtles”. This species is from southern Brazil. I’ll take better pictures when I have the opportunity.

I don’t know whether they are male/female. One can tell only when they grow older.

Here is their present aquaterrarium, in the process of being cleaned up. It is a simple process, but must be repeated often. I don’t have filters for the moment.

They enjoy to lay under the sun. They can see and hear extremely well. And I can tell you that they have different personalities.

  1. we had a couple of red-ear turtles.
they liked to crawl out of the water and bask in strong electric light

they liked to listen to Joan Sutherland sing arias
    especially Bellini and Donizetti

we made a special “turtle tape” of soprano bel canto arias one after the other
so we could play what they liked without having to change records (this was before CD)

they got big, at last there was no room in the apartment for a big enough swimming pool
    to satisfy their needs.

we had to give them to a kind of educational zoo at a park—-for children
    it was sad.

  2. Hi Marcus,

That’s interesting! I’ll try some music with them. Or I’ll sing myself! (I hope not to scare them!) :) These turtles are sensitive creatures indeed, with a delicate appreciation for good things. I have mine for a couple of months already. I call them and they respond. They do have different personalities; they behave differently.

I have plenty of sunlight and space for them here when they grow. But in case I cannot have them anymore for some reason, I must send them back to the breeder. That is in my contract with the breeder. Here in Brazil there is a problem with the red-ear turtles, I believe these are from Florida region. They are much like the “Tigre d’Águas” but were introduced here accidently in their habitat and it turns out that the red-ear are more aggressive than the Brazilian species, so it seems they are dominating more and more their habitat. I read this information elsewhere, I don’t have a link right now.

    Best,
    Christine
